We’re always told that we should buy more organic food, as it’s better for us… But how true is that really? It’s no secret that organic food is a lot more expensive and can be hard to source, so do we really need to eat everything natural? There are plenty of studies that show that we need to eat more fruit and vegetables, so why make it harder for ourselves by opting for the most expensive products in the store? Here’s what you should and shouldn’t buy organic.
Apples - Should
Research has proven that organic apples are a lot better for us than the ones filled with pesticides. It’s believed that there are up to 15% more antioxidants in an organic apple than one with pesticides. Studies show that those who consume less of these nasties are far less likely to end up with conditions such as cancer and asthma in later life. So, an apple a day really does keep the doctor away - as long as it’s organic!
Avocados - Shouldn’t
If you’re on the avocado train at the moment (who isn’t?), then you’ll know these yummy green fruits are expensive enough as it is. And don’t get us started with their shelf life… Why are they only ripe for approximately 38 seconds?! So, you can save yourself some money by going for avocados that aren’t organic. The thick outer layer protects the bit of the avocado you actually eat, so there’s no need to pay more for a pesticide-free version.
Strawberries - Should
It’s believed that non-organic strawberries can contain up to 20 different synthetic chemicals; none of which are very good for you! So, it’s best to find organic strawberries whenever you can. Sure, it may mean you can only enjoy them a few times a year when they’re in season, but they’ll be the best (and healthiest) strawberries you’ve ever eaten.
Sweet Potatoes - Shouldn’t
While regular potatoes are usually covered in pesticide residue, sweet potatoes aren’t. So, if you want to live a healthier life, then you have two options. Other opt for organic potatoes to avoid all the chemicals or go for non-organic sweet potatoes. There probably won’t be much difference price-wise either way!
Spinach - Should
Spinach is notorious for containing lots of chemicals and pesticides, so it’s always best to buy organic when you can. These leafy greens are an excellent addition to your diet but could counteract the positive if you don’t buy organic. It also seems to taste so much better! Just remember to always give your spinach leaves a wash before you use them, even if they say they’ve been pre-washed.
Asparagus - Shouldn’t
Of all the vegetables in the world, the humble asparagus is one of the least likely to have any pesticide residue on it. That means you can happily buy as much non-organic asparagus as you like, without fear of consuming too many chemicals.
So, there you have it. While there are some foods you should definitely buy organic, you can save some money by knowing which ones will be safer to purchase standard versions of.
