35 Creative Ways To Upcycle Flower Pots

With a little imagination, you can transform an everyday object into something entirely different. Even things like flower pots have the potential to become something new if you’re willing to get creative.
Feel like spicing up your house with some DIY but not sure how to go about it? If you’re not especially experienced with making things yourself then any task - no matter how small - can seem daunting. However, everyone has to start somewhere.

A great way to begin getting creative with your hands is to think outside of the box. See what you have lying around the house and consider whether any of it could be given a new lease of life.  If you own any flower pots, we’d recommend starting with those.

These containers may seem like they’re only suitable for growing flowers in, but that’s far from the truth. They have dozens of different uses just waiting to be unlocked. You don’t even have to work up a sweat transforming them into something new either. None of these little projects are especially taxing, meaning you can easily get a few of them done in an afternoon.

So, if your backyard’s looking overrun with pots, now might be the time to deal with them.

Bird feeder

Want to attract more birds to your backyard but not sure how. A great way to get these woodland creatures more interested in you is to set up a feeder. All you have to do is stick some food inside it, and they’ll gradually start recognizing your backyard as a place where they can eat.
You don’t even need to go to the effort of buying a feeder either. It’s easy enough to make one using a flower pot and some saucers. Drill a hole in the side of the container for the food to come out, and it’s done.

Birdbath

Of course, if you’re going to make a bird feeder, then you may as well take a bath to go with it. This will give your new wildlife friends somewhere to drink from and chill out when they’re not feasting themselves at their feeder.
Once again, it’s easy to make this creation out of flowerpots - four of them to be precise. Stacking them on top of each other like so creates a stand for the bath to sit on. Then, all you need is a clay saucer to stick on the top, and you’ll have the birdbath of your dreams.

Wreath

When the holidays come around, a lot of people choose to hang wreaths on their front door. It’s become something of a tradition now, but maybe that’s something that doesn’t appeal to you. If you’re worried about your house looking the same as everyone else’s, you could always make the wreath yourself.
Instead of buying it in a store, you could construct the decoration using flower pots from your backyard. This can look really impressive, especially when you’ve got all manner of cute plants growing in the little container. Your front door is sure to stand out from the crowd now.

Aquarium decoration

Fish can be the ideal pets to own if you want something that requires very little fuss. There’s not much you need to do to care for them, and you can lose hours just watching them swim around. While most people choose to fill their tanks with various decorations, this isn’t something that has to break the bank.
A lot of the time, you can just use stuff you find around the house or in your backyard, such as an old flower pot. You might be amazed by how much entertainment your aquatic pets can get out of these containers.

Chandelier

Be wary of inviting Sia round if you make this next creation because the last thing you want is her breaking this DIY chandelier. It’s an inventive piece that gives an old chandelier a new lease of life by replacing the lights with flower pots. If you want a more exciting way to display the flowers around your house, this might be it.
You can showcase whatever colorful plants you’ve been growing in a way that no-one else has probably ever seen before. Repainting the chandelier in a bright color as well will also help make this a very eye-catching piece.

Bathroom organizer

Ever find that the stuff in your bathroom always ends up disorganized and messy. It can be incredibly frustrating, especially when it stops you from quickly finding the thing you’re looking for. Of course, if you had a place for everything in your bathroom, then that probably wouldn’t happen anymore.
It’s for that reason that getting some containers for things like Q-tips and cotton balls is incredibly useful. However, if you’re not willing to spend money on such an item, you can always use some old flowerpots instead. Just beautify them with some paint, and they’ll be good to go.

Storage bins

It’s not just your bathroom where things have the potential to become cluttered. Every room in the house generally gets messy over time as people amass random bits and pieces. From leaflets and magazines to the odd trinket, this stuff tends to dominate a lot of the free space on tables or countertops.

Luckily, if you have some storage bins, you can stop that from happening. Just take a couple of flower pots from the backyard and spruce them up to fit your decor. Then, stick them anywhere that junk generally collects and start using them for your storage needs.

Cutlery holder

Cutlery draws are routinely mocked for being too cluttered. When you open one up, it’s often a case of luck if you actually pull out the utensil you wanted. Thankfully, if you have some holders like these on your countertop, that problem will be a thing of the past.

You can divide your cutlery up so each one has its own designated container, preventing you from mixing up your knives, forks, and spoons in the future. The beauty of using flower pots for this job is that you can easily decorate them, so they fit with your kitchen’s design scheme.

Yard decorations

Flower pots typically look pretty dull when you purchase them. They tend to all be just one color and not a particularly flattering one at that. For that reason, a lot of people probably look at these containers and think that nothing exciting can be done with them. However, that’s far from the case.

A bit of paint can make a huge difference, as evidenced by these yard decorations. By adding some more exciting colors to the pots and their saucers, they’ve taken on a whole new life as toadstools. Things like this make for great additions to any yard.

S’more grill

In the height of summer, there’s nothing better than a barbecue in the evening. The delicious food is the perfect complement to the sunny weather and warmer temperatures. However, sometimes you’re not always in the mood for a full-blown barbecue, especially if the sky is looking ominously cloudy.
In those instances, a flower pot can really come in handy. If you line the container with foil and fill it with charcoal, you’ll have your own mini barbecue. It might be a little too small for cooking proper food, but it’s the perfect size for roasting some s’mores on an evening.

Pincushion

Are you someone that does a lot of sewing at home? Maybe you’re responsible for repairing everyone’s clothes around the house, or it’s just something you enjoy doing in your spare time. Either way, it’s likely you’ll own a pincushion as part of your sewing kit.

These are great for storing your pins all in one place, although they can sometimes disappear on you. To stop that from happening, you can use a flower pot to keep everything together. By gluing the cushion to the inside of the container, you can ensure it stays secure, so your pins don’t go missing.

Jewelry organizer

Men might not have much of a need for this, but plenty of women may well find something like this handy. Anyone who loves wearing jewelry will understand how easy it is to lose things and get everything mixed up together. Most accessories people wear are small and discreet, making them easy to get misplaced.

If you’re someone who wants to avoid that, having an organizer will be a real lifesaver. You can arrange your jewelry so everything has its place and you’ll never have to worry about things going missing. Amazing what you can make with a few flower pots.

Stationery holder

The artists out there know that organization is everything when it comes to their stationery. Whether they’re a drawer or painter, it’s vital that the tools of their trade are always kept in good condition. They can’t have them going missing at any point, especially if they’re in the middle of a project.
Of course, pencils and paintbrushes can easily roll away and disappear under the furniture. It’s for that reason that having a repurposed flower pot around the house can really come in handy. Things can’t go missing if they all have a home in one of these containers.

Tool holder

If you’ve got a green thumb, the chances are you spend a lot of time in your backyard. There’s always something to do out there, whether it’s planting flowers, growing vegetables, or just a bit of weeding. Each of these tasks requires tools you probably want easy access to, so finding the right place to store them is a smart idea.

That’s where one of your old flower pots come in handy. It might be a little bruised and battered, but that doesn’t matter. Whatever condition it’s in, it’s the perfect place to leave your tools when you’re not using them.

Food cover

Do you ever put out food then regret it once you see all the bugs flying around? Wasps, flies, and other pesky insects love getting all up in your dinner, and keeping them at bay can be difficult. Thankfully, if you have a way to protect your food, you won’t have to worry about that anymore.

Flower pots are surprisingly effective at serving this purpose, provided the plate you’re covering fits the rim of the container. You just turn the pot upside down and put it over your food, preventing anything from being able to get near and contaminate it.

Yard lights

Yard lights are an excellent idea if you want to brighten up your outdoor space once the sun goes down. If you’re someone who enjoys chilling outside at night in the height of summer, you’ll probably appreciate having a bit of illumination around you. You might not want loads, which is why something like these is great.
They add a bit of light and color to your backyard without being too overpowering. All you need is some string lights, colored globes, and several flower pots for them to stand on. Then, your backyard light display will be ready for its debut.

Gift pot

Have you ever considered giving a flower pot to someone as a gift before? The answer is probably no, not unless you knew that person had a very green thumb. However, if you give them a good paint job, they can actually make for great gift pots with plenty of goodies inside.

Obviously, depending on what size the container is will determine how much you can actually fit inside. However, as long as it’s on the larger side, you can fill it with plenty of little treats for your loved one. Plus, they get to keep the pot for future use.

Candy holder

Any parent who’s ever dealt with an unruly child knows that nine times out of ten, the best way to calm them down is to bring out the candy. Kids seem willing to do anything for a sweet treat, and that can be a real blessing in a pinch.
Of course, too much of the stuff isn’t good for them, so it’s important to ensure they’re only eating it in moderation. That’s why a little jar like this is perfect. It keeps their candy intake under control. Plus, it's easy to make with just a flower pot and glass bowl.

Household decorations

You don’t have to go crazy when you start reusing your flower pots. These containers are most effective when they’re holding things, unsurprising given that’s what they were made to do. If you feel like your house needs sprucing up a little, why not use your pots as somewhere to hold decorations?

You can change what you put inside them depending on the holiday or season, ensuring they’re constantly in use. Maybe you fill it with some fake snow during the winter and sand in the summer. The choice is entirely yours, so go ahead and have fun with it.

Tiki torch

If string lights aren’t bright enough for you, then how about a tiki torch? This will certainly add a decent amount of light to your yard, and will also keep you warm too. You and your loved ones can all sit around it and admire the flames while you talk into the early hours.
It’s surprisingly simple to craft this DIY tiki torch, despite looking a little on the complicated side. As long as you have a flower pot to store the tiki torch canister in, you’re pretty much set. Then, you just add the stones to give it some personality.

DIY smoker

If you’ve never eaten smoked meat before, it might be worth giving it a try. The taste is unrivaled, and it’s sure to help get rid of any hunger pangs. Of course, a smoker can be quite pricey to buy, especially if you only plan on using it once or twice a year.
That’s why it could serve you well to make one yourself. That might seem like a demanding task, but it’s really not. As long as you own a large flower pot, you can set it up so it's able to cook things as big as a whole chicken.

Food pots

When you host a dinner party, you always want your guests to be impressed with what you serve up. It’s not just the food that catches people’s eyes, though. Your silverware and anything else you put on the table gets just as much attention, especially as it’s on display for the duration of the party.
So, why not get people talking by serving up some of the food in little flower pots? Things like guacamole, coleslaw, and other side dishes are ideal for these containers because they’re so easy to scoop up. Feel free to put whatever you want in there, though.

Accent table

It’s annoying how expensive furniture can sometimes be. You want to design your house to look nice and welcoming, but that’s hard to do when you can’t afford to buy anything. Thankfully, if you’re willing to get creative, there’s a lot you can achieve with just a flower pot and saucer.
As long as you have ones that are on the larger side, you can turn one of these containers into a table simply by placing it upside down. The saucer acts as the surface for this little accent table which provides the perfect accompaniment for any backyard seating area.

Lighthouse decoration

Your flower pots can be used to make more than just some toadstools in the backyard. If you’re willing to push yourself creatively, you could make yourself a lighthouse or two. Constructing the decoration itself isn’t too difficult so long as you have pots of decreasing sizes to work with.
You merely place them upside down and stack them on top of each other, with the largest at the bottom. Then, you just put a solar-powered yard light on the top, and you’re done. The real challenge comes in painting your miniature creation so that it actually looks like a lighthouse!

String and wool holder

Do you ever have an issue with your string or wool getting tangled? It can happen quite a lot, especially if you use these things frequently. No-one wants to waste their time trying to sort that problem out, which is why these holders are incredibly effective.
You just store the string, wool, or whatever it is you’re using under an upturned flowerpot, then feed it through the container’s drain hole. This will ensure that things never get tangled up, allowing you to knit sweaters or tie things up without issue. Now that’s what we call a useful life hack.

Windchime

Windy days aren’t usually fun, especially if it’s far from a gentle breeze outside. However, they’re a little more enjoyable if you have some chimes hanging in your front or back yard. Listening to them rattling in the wind can be incredibly relaxing, especially if you have a few of them going at once.
You can buy these chimes in pretty much every home supplies store across the nation, but not everyone wants to spend money on something like this. Thankfully, you don’t have to. As long as you have some small flower pots of differing sizes, you can make one yourself.

Dessert cups

Flower pots might have been designed to be used in the yard, but that doesn’t mean you can’t utilize them everywhere else around the house. Even in places like the kitchen they can come in handy, especially if you’re baking cupcakes. If you get yourself some of the smaller pots, you can use them in lieu of standard cupcake cases.
Just stick a liner at the bottom of the container and pour the completed mixture inside. After some time in the oven, your miniature desserts will be ready to enjoy, much to the delight of all your friends and family.

Flowerpot person

If none of the other yard decorations were to your fancy then maybe this one will be. Plenty of people own these flower pot figures because there’s so much you can do with them. You can have them as big or small as you like, and pose them in whatever way catches your attention.
The choice really is yours because you’re the one who has to put it together! Don’t worry, though, because it’s really very simple. As long as you have some glue as your trusty companion, bringing this yard decoration to life shouldn’t be too much of a challenge.

Dog treat container

All the dog owners out there know that their pets can never have too many treats. No matter how many they eat, they’ll never say no to another one. That’s why it’s important to keep the snacks out of reach so they can’t go helping themselves.

Usually, people just hide the bags away in hard-to-reach cupboards, but you don’t have to do that. If you want them to be somewhere a little more accessible, you can store them in a repurposed flower pot instead. It can really save you some effort whenever you want to give your dog a treat.

DIY Zeer pot

The summer heat can be unbearable at the best of times. There’s no escaping from it, with the only solace being the cold drinks and snacks you keep in the refrigerator. What do you do if you’re sitting outside and don’t want the effort of getting up and going to the kitchen, though?
You use a Zeer pot, of course. This is a convenient alternative to your refrigerator, which effectively acts as a cooler. It keeps your food and drinks cold so you can have them by your side at all times. Plus, it’s possible to make out of a flower pot.

Cupcake stand

If you’ve used small flower pots to make cupcakes, why not go one step further and present them on a stand made of the same thing? It’s easy enough to make one of these so long as you have a few pots and saucers at the ready. Coat them with a generous amount of colorful paint to make them pop, them glue them together.
Alternate between saucer and pot, ensuring the latter are turned upside down to ensure they distribute their weight better. Then, put your new creation to good use as you serve your loved ones some delicious sweet treats.

Drinks stand

There’s nothing like a refreshing beverage on a warm summer's day. It’s the perfect way to cool yourself down and forget about the overbearing heat around you. If you have one of these drinks dispensers at home, it might be a good idea to have a stand to set it on.
That way, you don’t have to hang the tap over the end of the table and potentially knock it over. Making a stand is no hard task, especially if you have a flowerpot on you. Just turn it upside down and place a downturned saucer on top of it.

Candleholders

Flower pots come in various sizes, making each of them useful for different things. If you have some of the smaller variety, it might be a good idea to turn them into candle holders. Their size makes them perfect for slipping tea lights inside which you can then decorate your backyard with.
They might not illuminate much outside, but if you’re out there stargazing, you won’t want a lot of light anyway. Candles are a great way for adding a little atmosphere to a room or backyard, and that goes for double when they’re in a cute holder like this.

Bread tin

If flower pots can be used instead of cupcake cases, why can’t it be the same with bread? Who needs to buy a special tin to bake some doughy goodness when you can just take a pot out of the backyard instead. Obviously, you should wash it first before using it for food, but after that, it’ll be good to go.
It’s advised that you soak the container for around 20 minutes before greasing it up with butter and adding the dough. After it’s spent 25 minutes in the oven, you should have a tasty loaf of bread to eat.

Room heater

It’s amazing just how many uses a flowerpot really has. Not only is it great at storing all sorts of items, but it can also be used for heating a room. By lighting a candle under an upturned pot that’s perched on some bricks, it’s actually possible to make a miniature heater out of your old flower container.

Neat, right? Granted, its reach isn't amazing, so it’s best used in small areas like a shed. However, even if its heating properties are limited, it’s still incredible what can be achieved with some bricks, a candle, and a flower pot!
